History

The territories of Puerto Cayo were populated since ancient times for various pre-Hispanic cultures such as Valdivia, Machalilla, among others, these ancient people had acknowledge of the arts of fishing and the handmade of clay objects and Spondylus shell collection, doing barter sea trade with Mexico, Peru and Chile, there are many settlements around the coast of Manabi with undiscovered archaeological treasures, but the arts of these people have remained nowaydays.

In the year of 1911, “Puerto Cayo” was established as a rural community, fulfilling its 102 years in 2013, this place has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country; nowadays it is in full development of tourism and because of this opportunity, we built this dream that comes true ” Sanctuary Puerto Cayo Lodge” as an alternative of first-class accommodation without losing the detail in its construction and promoting the local development, generating direct and indirect employment to improve the lives of its inhabitants.

Culture

In the province of Manabi settled one of the most important cultures of pre-Columbian period called Valdivia and Machalilla, which spanned until the present towns of Puerto Cayo, Boca de Cayoand Cantagallo, without neglecting other important cultures preceded of these.

South American region experienced a breakthrough in ceramic development and is known by research that the contribution of Culture Valdivia had to do with it, trade by land and especially by the sea through the famous raft who crossed several countries taking ceramics, especially Spondylus shell that had meaning in rituals, in the manufacture of jewelry and cash equivalent and in turn received other semi-precious stones to “Lapizlazuli” from Chile found in excavations around the province.

The legacy of those civilizations left us an artistic heritage and ability of creativity nowadays, made by men and women currently engaged in the manufacture of objects, furniture and utensils of clay, wood, straw weaving, wool and twine, cane handicrafts that remains among some members of the community, currently growers and extractors of hemp fiber are located between Rio Bravo and “Manantiales”, some families in these communities still made baskets, mats, hammocks, rugs, carpets, bags and are the main suppliers of raw material for Montecristi, brick production is concentrated in Salaite, Rio Bravo and “manantiales”; tagua crafts are made in Las Cruces, plush fabrics and crafts in VueltaLarga, fisherman’s net and piolines for boats in Puerto Cayo.

The inhabitant of Puerto Cayo are a very happy people, they always enojy and participate in religious festivals, especially the famous celebration of “San Pedro y San Pablo” that begins with the fishing period.

It also led to a series of mythical characters among its inhabitants who have been counted from generation to generation as the whistle of the Devil, ghost ship over and the passage of the skull walker.
